Abstract :

The paper presents the results of field and laboratory investigations on selected properties of coal mine waste used for levelling of surface, in the aspect of its natural utilisation. Obtained results show that currently the reaction of investigated materials is slightly alkaline and advantageous for the growth of most plants used in biological reclamation. Some limitation for plant development may be increased salinity. Heavy metal content was compared with obligatory standards used in Poland. Analysis showed that investigated material may be used in reclamation. Based on determined bioaccumulation coefficient (BAF) it was noted that plant species covering the investigated landfill are characterised by low level of heavy metals accumulation. Obtained results do not indicate phytotoxicity of coal mine waste and allow to state that the material deposited in the investigated landfill may be used as a substrate for plants in its natural utilisation.
